Saying Goodbye- the right way

Bidding a graceful adieu to your employer is as important as finding the right job. No matter what the job is, most of us need to remember that we are indebted to our previous superiors as in many ways the boss plays a role of a mentor from whom you get to learn a few valuable lessons. It is his/her wise advice and support that would have helped you climb up the ladder of your career.

Some of you would have come to the point wherein you would not require the support, and would want to move out of your bosses’ shadow or where you have started finding the job monotonous and hence looked out for a change. However, that does not stop you from being grateful to the advice and counseling you have received from your boss. It becomes obvious that you need to get out of the organization and retire your mentor, but the bond between the two of you might make things a little complicated. Even if there is no friendship lost between the two of you, an abrupt resignation letter mailed to your boss without prior notice would make things sour. It is always best to leave an organization with good feelings rather than carrying a baggage of ill feelings. All that is required of you is to spend some time on assessing how best to put forward your resignation and the reason for your decision without hurting the other person’s feelings. Engaging in forthright conversation and stating that you have gained a lot of knowledge and wisdom from your boss and organization, but would like to move forward and check other avenues/chances helps your boss in accepting the decision gracefully as well (in most cases). Also try your best to serve the expected notice period and not rush out as soon as you put in your paper, as the organization and your boss have given you a chance to stand where you are and it is bit your duty to co-operate with them during this short span of time. Try not to accuse your boss or the organization of being wrong or outdated and hence forcing this decision upon you. It helps to be diplomatic and just mention that while you are grateful for the chance and support, you would like to widen horizons.

Try to leave on a good note and as the world is indeed small and saving friendships and maintaining a good network of contacts can do wonders to your profession, even if it includes a jerk or two!!
