Recruiting the Right Candidate

A right candidate for any job opening requires a sound technical knowledge and expertise in the respective domain. Recruiting the right person for the available position is no joke and a decision that involves a lot of thinking, observations, and also risks. Hiring the right candidate makes your job a lot easier and also helps the productivity of your team increase. A lot of candidates sound impressive, positive, and enthusiastic during the interview, but lack all this after they begin work. This makes your job tougher and a lot more risky. Hiring a person involves more than just looking at the resume or testing their communication skills.

While hiring a candidate for an open position, one needs to be very clear on the kind of role, its requirements and objectives, and also what the candidate needs to possess in order to fulfill the role to its best. This means, not just looking at the technical aspects, but also other aspects such as the candidate being a team-worker, good at multi-tasking, or a person who does not give away under stress. Being open about your requirements at the beginning of the interview helps in putting across the message clearly. Always ask the candidate questions based on how comfortable he/she is working under such circumstances as it would help you gain clarity on how suitable the candidate is. Also, asking for instances and examples from previous work experience that are relevant to your current requirements would help in assessing the candidate’s proficiency for the role. Try and understand what the candidate is looking for and expecting from the role and organization and see if you can fulfill the expectations. It is also very important to ensure that the candidate will gel well with the current team as it would have a major impact on the team’s output.

Giving the candidate a few instances of crisis at work and questioning how he/she would deal with it would also help you understand the candidate’s way of dealing with such situations and judging if he/she is capable of working with your team. Also try and add a test to assess the technical skills required as it is equally important at work.
