Two Good Lists for Job Seekers

We like lists of things here at Voolkan—straight-forward, to-the-point, no-nonsense lists are just easier to digest than the long-winded, flowery prose that we (paradoxically) love to write. With that in mind, imagine our delight when Cheezhead and Career Hub had two numbered lists posted this morning with some interesting thoughts and statistics for job seekers!

First up is Vanessa Dennis’s post on Cheezhead Recruiting News and Opinion listing the 15 best and worst cities for job seekers…

Rounding out the 15 Best Cities:

15. Seattle-Tacoma
14. Dallas-Fort Worth
13. Omaha

2. Washington DC
1. Des Moines-Ames

and from the 15 Worst:

15. Cincinnati
14. New York
13. Tampa-Saint Petersburg (Sarasota)

2. Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle
1. Detroit

And from Billie Sucher of Career Hub comes her list of “18 Things Your Mama Never Told You About Looking for Work, According to Those Looking for It,” which is composed of bits and pieces of thoughts and advice she’s collected throughout the year from people looking for jobs. Some highlights include:

3. That not everyone will want you, regardless of how educated, experienced, credentialed, talented or awesome you may be.
6. That you may be asked illegal or inappropriate questions during an interview.
17. That you will need to acquire a well-developed sense of humor, should you not have one.
